小乔木，树型向上，花型为重瓣，浅杯型，花大，花瓣正面中心为红紫色，有雄蕊瓣化现象，花瓣2轮，稀3轮；果实为椭圆形，个小，橙黄色，花萼不宿存，挂果期短。以重瓣、红紫色花朵为主要观赏特征。
