落叶矮化小乔木，高1~2 m，树冠卵圆形，紧凑。树皮灰褐色，一年生小枝绿色、绿褐色，疏被白色柔毛；二年生小枝紫褐色。叶纸质，上面深绿色，疏被白色柔毛，背面绿色，被白色柔毛；倒卵状圆形、椭圆形、倒卵状椭圆形。花顶生；花蕾长卵形，被白、黄褐色柔毛；花杯状，盛开时，花被片外张略平展，萼片状舌型，绿色；花朵背面1/2~2/3为紫红色，较粗紫红色中脉直至瓣顶，腹面白色，基部有时略带黄色。成熟蓇葖果紫红色，圆柱形。花期3月下旬~4月上旬，果熟期8月。

适种范围

郑州、西安、杭州、成都、深圳及其气候环境相似区域（7-10区）。

Variety characteristics

      Deciduous dwarf small trees with the height about 1~2 meters, crown oval, compact. Bark grayish brown, annual branchlets green and green-brown,  sparsely white pilose; biennial branchlets purple-brown. Leaves papery, dark green above, sparsely white pilose, abaxially green, white pilose, obovate-rounded, or elliptic or obovate-elliptic. Flowers terminal; buds long ovate, white or yellowish brown pilose; flowers cup-shaped, perianth slightly extraspanding when in full bloom, sepals tongue-shaped, green; Flowers 1/2~2/3 abaxially is purplish red, thicker purplish red midvein to apex, ventral white, base sometimes yellowish. Mature follicles purplish red, cylindrical. The florescence is from late March to early April and the fruit maturing in August.
